INVITED KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

MEET OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKERS WHO ARE RESEARCHING DIFFERENT TYPES OF CLIMATE ISSUES AROUND THE WORLD

PROFESSOR STEPHEN WOODWARD

University of Aberdeen, The School of Biological Science. His research interests include alien invasive pathogens, their detection, the damage they cause, how they are spread globally and mitigation methods that can be used to reduce their impacts on natural ecosystems. The influence of rhizosphere microbiology and host physiology on the initiation and development of root diseases remains a research focus. A range of pathogen problems is under investigation in his laboratory, although the current focus is on species of Fusarium, Verticillium, Phytophthora and Pythium. One major interest is in how plants in populations respond to infection, with a view to finding genotypes that may be less susceptible to pathogens and, therefore, could be used in the repopulation of ecosystems damaged by attacks of alien invasive pathogens. He is also examining the potential use of bacterial biological control agents against diseases caused in plants by fungi an Oomycetes.

PROFESSOR TUNCAY NEYISCI

Ecology Scientist. Born and grown up in İzmir/Turkey. Graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Forestry in 1972. Worked for Western Anatolia Research Institute for 14 years. Meanwhile completed his PhD in the field of forest ecology. In 1990, he has been invited to the Akdeniz University to establish the Center for Ecological Studies. He worked there till 2010 as the head of the Center. Between 1999-2014 he has given lectures either in Faculty of Fine Arts and Faculty of Tourism as a professor. He put an end to his academic carrier at the beginning of 2014. His field of studies are ecology, fire ecology, environmental education, perception of nature, and ecological design. He is the head of Western Mediterranean Branch of the Foresters' Association of Turkey.

PROFESSOR MARC HANEWINKEL

Chair of Forestry Economics and Forest Planning University of Freiburg

His research focusses on climate change impacts on forests and ecosystem services delivered by them, risk assessment and risk modeling especially related to abiotic disturbances (storm), dealing with uncertainty in natural resource management, economics of close-to-nature forestry, eco-efficiency, transformation of forests, Decision Support Systems, green investments.

PROFESSOR MURAT TÜRKEŞ

Emeritus Professor, Center for Climate Change and Policy Studies and Department of Physics

Member of the Executive Committee for the “Bogazici University Center for Climate Change and Policy Studies", Istanbul, Turkey. Research interests of Professor Türkeş include landslides, drought, land degradation and desertification; ecological biogeography, forest fires climatology and meteorology; synoptic climatology and meteorology, regional climatology and climate dynamics; climate change and variability; disaster risk management, vulnerability analysis and modelling of climate change, desertification and landslides; the UN climate change and desertification conventions.

Upcoming Events

Forests are important in determining the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere; they absorb 2.6 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, about one-third of the carbon dioxide released from the burning of fossil fuels (CIFOR).
